Balayage (say it with us: baa·luh·yaaj) is a French word meaning, essentially, “sweeping.” It is an advanced highlighting technique that allows the hairdresser more freedom in placement than traditional highlighting. Rather than using foil packets to isolate lightener or color, balayage artists hand-paint highlights, sweeping the color brush on the hair as an artist would apply color to a canvas. This less structured method of highlighting (and lowlighting) requires advanced skill and vision, and results in a soft gradation of color that resembles a very natural, lived-in look.
